You started your first European tour couple days ago and you are performing in Paris tonight. How does it feel ?
Yes, tonight will be my first time performing in Paris and we’re sold out ! It’s just unbelievable. I’ve been there before but only as a tourist. Im pretty excited to perform tonight. I played in Portugal 2 days ago and it was amazing ! So many people, an audience that I wasn’t expecting. If only I knew I would’ve add more dates on the tour !
It’s been a long journey for you because you started your career in 2012.
Yes, I’ve been singing in Portuguese forsSix years now but It’s only been one year since I started singing in Spanish and English.
2017 was a big year for you. You started your first English song with Iggy Azalea on the record “Switch”, after that you did « Downtown » featuring J Balvin in Spanish. Was it challenging for you to sing in other languages?
Iggy helped me a lot with the English accent singing. I took a special class to help me remove my Portuguese accent while I’m singing. When you’re in the studio, it’s really different. To speak and to sing English is two different things. She gave me great tips and she spent hours in the studio teaching me various accents because she’s Australian but when she sings it doesn’t sound like she’s from there.
J Balvin and Maluma were very helpful too while singing in Spanish.
Last Year, you’ve also collaborated with producer Poo Bear on the song « Will I See you?” ». He wrote for Justin Bieber and Usher. How was that experience?
It was amazing ! Poo Bear is the greatest! It was very easy to work with him. Incredible experience !
In all of your albums you mix different types of music such as Funk, Pop, Electronic, Reggae, etc. Did you grew up listening to all of this genres ?
Yes ! I don’t know why but I wasn’t the type of kid that only listened to children songs. I did but I listened to so many different things and my favorite singer always was Mariah Carey. She’s the one who taught me how to sing ! I’ve been listening to her and RnB since I was 3 years old !
What’s your favorite Mariah Carey Song ?
« Fantasy » and actually I have a little piece of it in my concert.
You grew up in the Favélas and you started singing in your Church. How does these two environments influenced your songs?
Everything I learned in music was in Church. I got my melodies from the church and going back to Mariah Carey, you find the Gospel and the harmony in her songs too. Also, I come from a very humble family and I didn’t have the opportunity to learn music and art so the Church was where I started to understand songs and music. My grandfather used to play the piano in church and I learned a lot with him. He was teaching me how to play the piano but he passed away and I didn’t want to continue after that.

In September 2017 you started the project “Checkmate” where you released a new song with a video every month : “Will I see you?” with Poo Bear, “Downtown” featuring J Balvin and “Vai Malandra”. Abour “Vai Malandra” video: You shot the video in The Favelas in Brazil and it seems like you had a lot of fun shooting this video. Beside all of the oil in this video (go check the video and you’ll understand) there’s also a lot of diversity. What was the idea behind it?
My idea was to show the good side of the favelas. Some people said “Oh this is not Brazil” but yes it is. We didn’t create anything, everything you see is real. It was just things that I used to do growing up, like at the beginning of the video, you can see me ride what we call a “motto-taxi”. I used to do that all the time to get to the top of the Favelas. Also in the video you can see my cellulite to show that nothing is photoshopped.
It’s all natural.
Not everything is natural, I did plastic surgery on my face but to lose the cellulite I have to go on a diet and I hate it ! I can’t stand going to the gym and I love to eat. It’s just there and I’m fine with it.
Your real name is Larissa but you chose the stage name “Anitta”. I’ve read that it was based on a character from a Brazilian TV Show “La Presença de Anita”, tell me the story behind it.
It was a TV show in Brazil and the main character was named Anita. What I love about her character was that she was 18 years-old and didn’t want to be only one type of woman. She showed me that it was okay to be romantic, sexy and smart at the same time and I didn’t have to choose. I loved it because that’s who I am ! I like to be different.
Is there any international artist you wish you could collaborate with?
Drake ! I love him.
As mention earlier, you’ve worked with J Balvin couple times, most recently on the song “Machika”. What’s the best advice he gave you ?
“Don’t Be Afraid !” I used to be scared of trying things, a lot of people used to put me down and he told me “Just don’t be afraid” and it was a very good advice.
I feel like a collaboration between you and Pharrell would be amazing.
I actually was in the studio with him last month ! He called me, I went to the studio and it was crazy ! I can’t talk so much about it because it is for one of his songs but then he gave me another song to do whatever I wanted and I’m really happy with it. We’re working on it, he helped me a lot with my English as well. I just couldn’t believe it when he called me. I was like “This guy knows who I am ?!”.
We were recording the song in Las Vegas and he went to perform at the Billboard Music Award then he went back to the studio right after with the same outfit he had just performed in. I was like « you are so me ! ». He really is the best.
