Here at the Sankuanz fashion show, we discovered a collection named “DESTROYS”. What is the story and the message of this Fall-Winter 2017 line?
This Fall-Winter 2017 is about the relationship between the human consciousness, chemistry, politics and today’s atmosphere in the world.
The environment is one of the main topics of this line. You can see how important it is to Sankuanz through several items of our new collection, made of authentic materials used in the making of chemical production suits.
I’m not suggesting that the world is coming to an end, but a lot of things happened and have changed. The Sankuanz Fall-Winter 2017 collection is just a reflection of it. It’s also a warning aimed at people. We want them to think about the issues we are dealing with.
In the midst of the colours and prints of the collection, we noticed the sentence “Communism never existed” printed on the back of a jacket. What does it mean from somebody born, raised and based in the Popular Republic of China?
Here, the word “communism” is used as a symbol of every system working around the world, no matter the sector.
It’s also a symbol of a way of thinking. The one-track thinking, or as you call it in French, la pensée unique, is what we want to destroy. It’s deeper than politics and communism as at the political movement, or a regime.
Government officials in Xiamen are banking on the city’s growing fashion scene. What do you think of that support and how does it affect your brand?
Government officials did invest in the fashion industry of Xiamen. They helped with production, factories, transport and stuff like that. It’s indeed a great push and I’m really happy about that. The scene is becoming broad. We want to do and see more.
"Regarding Sankuanz, we do high fashion, which is still a niche. We are one of the only designer brands in China in this field and represent a very minor part of China’s fashion industry."

Tell us about Xiamen, China. What do you love the most about the city?
Xiamen is like the Los Angeles of China! There are mountains and sea all around, just like L.A. has its hills and the ocean nearby.
Xiamen is not like Beijing and Shanghai. It’s not as industrial and commercial. People are more relax. There’s more and more young, creative people moving to Xiamen to master their craft. The community is getting bigger.
At Sankuanz, we work a lot with graphic designers, musicians and artists on exhibitions and projects. We just collaborated with an artist and designed a cake!
Xiamen isn’t popular yet, but young people find their happiness there. It’s great, because the message of Sankuanz is intended for them. The warning sent by our Fall-Winter 2017 collection is for them to be aware of our current challenges and take action. Youth has the power to change things.
You stated in a prior interview with Highsnobiety that you enjoyed the calm of Xiamen. How are you dealing with the frenzy of Paris Fashion Week?
Xiamen doesn’t have the influence of Paris. This is the perfect environment to focus on my work and my message, and not get distracted.
When in Paris, I can show my vision and get feedbacks from the international press and people we’re in contact with. Paris Men’s Fashion Week is an awesome platform to display what we worked on and watch the reaction it triggers.
I’ll remember my stay, marking the first time that Sankuanz was featured on the official calendar. I love Paris and enjoyed every bit of my trip, from my arrival to the show.
