What is your background ?
We have both studied architecture and then slid into the fashion industry.
How did you end up working on this project ?
The Trussardi team contacted us to be part of the Archive Now project, asking us to reinterpret the brand’s archive pieces through our imaginary and we were more than happy to do so.
How did you work with Trussardi on their archives ?
We tried to focus on the leather pieces that are Trussardi’s signature and contextualise them in Milan, which is where the brand started. We chose historical pieces that have been worn in important events and theatre plays and a combination of colourful pieces to match Checking Invoices identity as well as each short script.
Do you think fashion take itself too seriously ?
You are working a lot on Instagram. Why did you choose this medium ? Do you think it s still relevant in 2019 ?
It was the most immediate way to put the project out in the world. Yes, we believe it’s still relevant as it’s very direct and it became part of everyone’s routine, the time that users pass inside the app it’s still extremely high.
Why being anonymous ?
We are not anonymous, our name is Checking Invoices. Everything besides that, we think is irrelevant to be mentioned. We like that the character of Checking Invoices has its own identity which is independent to us and our personal work.
"We are aware that Checking Invoices triggers discussion on different topics, such as identity, the fashion system etc. and we are very happy to talk about them, as they reflect pop culture. It wasn’t intentional though"
You also created a limited edition accessory. Are you planning a collection ?
Yes, we created a cardholder, as small leather goods are in Trussardi’s DNA and it will be available in different colours next season. There are no plans for other collections, but we have to admit we are excited working on this kind of side projects, so we’re open.
Is Milan a good place for young designers ?
Milan has historically been one of the fashion capitals, having showcased the most influential fashion designers in the past decades. After a period of numbness, we think that, in the last 3 years, Milan has been refreshed and it’s becoming again a place that promotes innovation and ideas, so on we think it’s a good environment for new designers.
Do you feel any pressure in your work ?
Of course, though Checking Invoices is more a playful project and it’s not our main job, so we're trying to keep stress out of it. Despite that, of course, there are ups and downs.
Is there a sense of rebellion that instilled in you ?
There is a definitely a sense of rebellion in us in a lot of ways and for a lot of reasons, but Checking Invoices is not the manifestation of it. In this sense, the project started very naturally for our personal joy and this is why is going on. On the other hand, we are aware that it triggers discussion on different topics, such as identity, the fashion system etc. and we are very happy to talk about them, as they reflect pop culture. It wasn’t intentional though.
What do you want to do next with Checking Invoices ?
We have a lot of ideas but it is a project that changes constantly, so we do not have a proper plan. For sure, we’d like to do more constructed and 360° projects, such as the one that Trussardi allowed us to do.
